Our mission is to provide the opportunity for individuals who have been labeled moderately to severely developmentally disabled to participate in an adult continuing-education program at the University of Alberta. The program focuses on inclusion in both formal and informal university and employment settings. This provides the opportunities to develop friendships/relationships, meaningful experiences, increased self-esteem and self-actualization, and nurtures employment potential. Personal supports are developed through classmates, coworkers, volunteers and friends, allowing for inclusion to happen organically. Operating under the principles of Social Role Valorization and integration/inclusion, the program ensures the provision of enriching educational experiences in order to promote personal and career achievements.
Social Role Valorization (SRV) is defined as the use of culturally valued means to enable, establish, enhance, maintain, and/or defend valued social roles for people at value risk (Wolfensberger, 1985, 1998, 2000).
